Take a few minutes to reflect on your mapping project. Give us an overview to what you’ve done so far. Then tell us what you like most about this project. Conclude by letting us know what you think needs the most work.
So far during this mapping project i have visited the three sites around denver i plan on comparing. what i like so far about this project is that it is easier to write about things that interest me. the hard part of this project is remembering descriptions of the nightlife, when i've only been back to these sites in the daytime to take notes.
For my mapping project I chose South Pearl Street, focusing particularly on the event that was held there this weekend Brewgrass. A festival of local breweries and bluegrass music. So far I have gone to South Pearl Street obviously to observe this event. I have written a description of this first observation (both of S Pearl street and the block on which the event was held). What I am enjoying most about this project is the opportunity to go out and explore a bit more. In this way it has encouraged me and my husband (as I usually ask him to accompany me) to get out and enjoy Denver a lot more. I definitely need to do a bit more observation, hopefully going to see another event that is held on Pearl Street, the Farmer's Market this sunday. I would like to use this observation to compare and contrast the events that are held on S Pearl, and how people interact with these events. I also need to do a bit more background research, all I have gotten so far is the local web-page for south pearl street.
I have written a preliminary draft of my paper already, which is 6 pages. It includes introduction, description and analysis sections. This means I have already gone and done my entire field research. I have also created a map for my project that I am fairly satisfied with. I have really enjoyed learning more about the area around me and have found it to be really important to understand how and why the space is used. This has helped me understand my own history both as a Coloradan and as a resident of Monument. I think what I need to focus on now is my analysis section and my map. I am still not satisfied with either.
So far i have done a good amount of observation. I have a good base from viewing park activities. I have a few themes and questions on mind that I am going to focus on.
What I like about this project is that it allows me top get away from books and computers and get out there for some hands on study. I enjoy Wash park so doing work on a place I already spend a good amount of time at has been enjoyable.
I have formulated a good deal of ideas and observations, now i need to organize my thoughts and piece together the paper. I need to get an idea and plan for the map of the project as well.
The topic of my Mapping Project is to look at the Common Park at LoDo and how do locals use this place. So far I haven't really started my paper yet, but I have been done reading some cool resources, discovering the place, and asking few locals how they like the place they are using. I think so far I have a quite good stuffs before I start to write my paper. I think the most work is to really try to figure out how do I do to mapping out this project. I think the start is the hardest part, but once you really go through it, thing would be much easiler.
At this point in the mapping project, I have been to three different movie theaters, the HighlandsRanch AMC 24, Elvis Theater, and the United Artist at Park Meadows Mall around 3pm. I’ve observed the people in the lobby, types of people that go, and their behavior before and during the movie, also noting details about the specific theater as well. So far, I’m enjoying this project because it’s fun and interesting, plus my sister and I get to attend different movies. I still need to make observations during evening movies and the different crowds that go, possibly venturing to an independent theatre downtown. Sifting through my data is the next big project.
I am working on mapping the 16th street mall area of downtown Denver. So far I have been down to the mall three times. The first time I just observed while walking around and taking notes. I was really interested by how diverse of a population with different purposes are down there every day. The second time I spent time at the 16th street mall I again observed while taking notes, but I also prepared a short survey for individuals who had the time to stop and talk for a few moments. I tried to approach people randomly at first, but I realized that certain demographic groups were a lot more likely to stop and take the survey than others. I need to work on pulling together my observations and collected data with the physical attributes of the 16th street mall if I want to write a successful geographical map of the area.
So far I have been to two places and conducted two interviews and taken some pictures and collected some souvenirs which I can digitalize to use for my map. I have a list of the other places I want to go and I need to go back to one place and get some interviews and take pictures. I am enjoying this project because it's fun to explore Denver and meet new people in the name of schoolwork. It's also helping me get to know Denver better. I need to work the most on excluding my obvious biases from my report and from the people who I choose to interview.
So far, I have begun my field research and have collected data from many different sources. I am collecting data from various customers at Safeway, Whole Foods, and University Mart. With this data, I can compile qualitative data, but also when speaking to the customers can gather more personal data such as reasons for shopping at one store instead of another. This project is interesting because it is not very similar with the others of this course. Some more work will be needed to compile and analyze the data.
